Specialisations

Mr Redecker holds the title of ‘Specialist Lawyer for Family Law’ as well as the title of ‘Specialist Lawyer for Traffic Law’. Mrs Reineke is currently in the process of acquiring the title of ‘Specialist Lawyer for Inheritance Law’. Here we explain which requirements must be met in order to be allowed to use the title of specialist lawyer:

Only those who attend a course lasting several weeks, in which all areas of the respective field of law are taught in detail and which concludes with written examinations lasting several hours under exam conditions, can become a specialised lawyer. The legal profession has subjected itself to strict standards here, which are reflected in the fact that inadequate performance will result in not being authorised to become a specialist lawyer. In addition to the theoretical training, anyone wishing to become a specialist lawyer must also prove that they have worked on a sufficient number of cases in the specialised field. The number of cases required varies between 50 and 120, depending on the area of law, and must cover the entire spectrum of the area of law. Special committees of the bar association examine these cases and recommend to the board of the Hanseatic Bar Association either to authorise or deny the right to use the title of specialist lawyer. Finally, the prerequisite for specialisation is that the applicant in question has been working in the legal profession for at least 3 years without interruption.
